Ten days after the half marathon, it’s back to running! I have been exercising since then, mind you; last week ended up being ultra-busy but I did get some swimming in, and this week has already had cycling, swimming, and now a spinning/running brick. I need to try and figure out if the better move might be to break down the bike quickly and run outside next time; there’s something nice about just going 15 steps to be on the track and dash out two miles with no interruptions, but it was also a pretty gorgeous night outside. Hmmmm. Will think this one through. Anyway, it was a short run, but after coming off a tough-but-good spinning class (and ten days off of running) I’m really quite pleased.

Brick

Start time: 3/3/10, 6:10pm & 7:15pm
Location: TJ Community Center
Distance: 2 miles & 2 miles
Average pace: 8:12min/mile & 8:30min/mile
Total Miles For March: 4 miles
Total Miles For 2010: 123 miles

Wednesday was a bit of an experiment; I’d missed Tuesday’s run due to jet lag, so I decided that I’d try and get some running in either before or after spinning class. By the time I got there, I was too early for the 6:30 start, but too late to get 4 miles in. So instead, I ran two miles, then did my 45 minute spin class, then skipped the cool down and dismantling of the bike (don’t worry, I cleared it with the instructor in advance) and immediately ran 2 more miles. Considering I felt a tiny bit wobbly at first from the transition, I’d say only picking up 18 seconds per mile was a nice accomplishment. (Then I went back and wiped down and took apart the bike as well as did some cool-down stretches.)

Run Bike Run

Start time: 8/5/09, 6:10am
Location: North Arlington
Distance: 2 miles & 2 miles
Average pace: 8:13min/mile & 8:16min/mile
Total Miles For August: 20 miles
Total Miles For 2009: 479 miles

Greg vs the duathlon! Sort of.

To switch things up a bit this morning, I got up early and ran the first two miles of my 4-mile loop, which conveniently has my gym just past the 2-mile point. I changed my shirt, headed in, and went to spinning class… well, except the instructor never showed up. (Oops!) Still, I did get my 45 minutes of cycling in, just without someone pushing us extremely hard. (One of the people in the class did lead us as best she could, though, which was nice.) Then, I grabbed my stuff, jogged over to where I’d left off, and ran the remaining two miles home. It was a nice little way to have transitions of sorts, and to make the morning a little more exciting. Plus, the plan was to go get burgers and fries at lunch today, so an extra caloric burn was definitely a good thing.

Brick?

Start time: 7/6/09, 8:36pm
Location: South Arlington
Distance: 4 miles
Average pace: 9:19min/mile
Total Miles For July: 19 miles
Total Miles For 2009: 398 miles

Ok, I know that a “brick” in the triathlon world is doing either a swim/bike or a bike/run workout. So really, my swim/run workout wasn’t a brick. But it was still switching from one to the next, which was important in my mind. I had my second lap swimming class this evening, which went pretty well. (Especially at the end where we had three sprints and… yay… I actually came in first in all three. By just a second with each, but still, it felt nice.) Afterwards, I pulled on my shoes and a shirt, and went out for a 4-mile run. As soon as I headed out I did realize my one mistake—Wakefield High School (where I’m swimming) appears to be at the top of a hill. So what I had to run down early on, had to then be run back up during mile 3. Uggghhh. One really steep hill. And then I decided to pick up a fourth mile and it was all hills too. I definitely ran out of gas there, but don’t get me wrong, that was a good thing. Nice to know limits.
