3 miles, no waiting… er, that is, walking

Start time: 04/05/05, 4:30pm
Location: Local Neighborhood
Distance: 3 miles
Average pace: 9:36min/mile

Decided to have my own mini 3-mile time trial to break in my new running shoes as well as to see what pace group I might end up in this upcoming training season. I ran it straight through, no walk breaks, and had a 28:48 finishing time, which gives me a 9:36min/mile time and would put me squarely in the 11min/mile training group. Wow.

Back to earlier weekday running…

Start time: 03/22/05, 8:00am
Location: Local Neighborhood
Distance: 3.75 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 4:1
Average pace: 9:58min/mile

Ugh. It’s been a while since I got up early to go running on a weekday! (As in, not at all until today in the year 2005.) It was fun to be back out there early again, though, and watch the traffic slowly build up on Gosnell Road. (I have to amuse myself somehow.) Managed to completely and utterly be unable to find my running jacket, so I ended up pulling on the spare one that sits in the trunk of the car, which was ice cold. Brrrrrr. Halfway through the run I finally figured out where my jacket was lurking. Sure enough, under my running bag in my room. That’ll teach me to not put things away afterwards.

Back on the moving sidewalk…

Start time: 03/09/05, 8:45pm
Location: Gold’s Gym
Distance: 3.75 miles
Average pace: 10:40min/mile
Time: 40 minutes

One final run before the St. Patrick’s Day 10K… a nice little jaunt over at the gym. It’s been a while since I’ve been over there and it was surprisingly crowded. What was everyone doing there? I guess Monday’s nice weather jumpstarted everyone’s exercise again.

Snow, snow, snow

Start time: 01/22/05, 2:00pm

Location: Gold’s Gym

Distance: ~3.75 miles

Average pace: ~10:40min/mile

Time: 40 minutes

It was snowing Saturday morning, so we cancelled our group run. I ended up walking over to the gym and ran for 40 minutes; I was hoping to go longer than that since the gym was fairly empty thanks to the weather, but I hadn’t done any stretching beforehand (bad Greg) between that and the cold my legs were pretty tight. That, and I stupidly left my water bottle on the kitchen counter and when you’re seriously considering stealing the bottle of the fellow running next to you, the thirst is getting hard to ignore. Oops.

Bad planning strikes again! 🙂

Hopefully this week I’ll get my butt in gear and start running three times a week again.

The invasion of the gym

Start time: 01/11/05, 8:00pm

Location: Gold’s Gym

Distance: ~3.66 miles

Average pace: ~10:54min/mile

Time: 40 minutes

Oops, forgot to post this yesterday. It was raining here in DC so I went over to the gym and ran on the treadmill. (Thus the approximations, because treadmills are almost never accurate. It’s a rough guess at best.) In the 40 minutes I ran on the treadmill, I saw no less than three groups of new gym members get tours of the facility and I had to chuckle. Don’t get me wrong, if they stick with it then hurrah for them, that’s fantastic that they actually made a change and went with it. But it’s just like my running trail every year; January is full of new faces, sometimes even into early February, and then you never see them again. It’s a pity, but also a statement on how we treat making change in our life. It ain’t easy most of the time and it’s far, far simpler to give up. To this day I’m not entirely sure why I didn’t, but I’m glad I stuck it through.

Yep, the heat sure has arrived. Add in a tight calf that never loosened and me not thinking to drink some water before I left and it wasn’t a terribly comfortable run. And now my ankle is a tiny bit sore, so I might skip Thursday’s run entirely and just do some long walks on Wednesday and Thursday instead.

I rarely learn from my mistakes, it seems. Once again, Thursday morning involved me waking up and deciding to run after work. In my defense, I distinctly heard rain coming down at 6am, so declared the morning attempt rained out. Except, of course, when I woke up at 8am it was no longer raining. Bah! When I got home, the rain was threatening to come back in a big way, although amazingly I missed it this time by about 15 minutes. Towards the end I could feel some nice cool storm winds blowing in, which felt really nice. It’s fun to “race the storm”.

Oops! Completely forgot to post this yesterday. Anyway, a near-perfect run, aside from the sweltering heat. (Oh joy, we’ve moved directly into summer.) I finally added the extra half-mile spur back onto my route to push it back up to 3 miles, which is perfect for my Monday/Wednesday* run schedule. Felt really, really good.

(* — Except when I decide to make them Tuesday/Thursday, of course.)

I was working my once-a-month shift at Big Planet today, and after writing a review and getting home I discovered the 3 1/2″ disk I’d saved it to was corrupted. So clearly, I had to go back before someone emptied the computer’s recycle bin. But it’s not that far away—less than two miles—and I started thinking, “Why don’t I jog over there since we cancelled our Saturday run because of rain?” And the next thing I knew, that’s exactly what I was doing. Now I admittedly stopped halfway through because once I got to the store I got three or four minutes of rest while I retransferred the file, but I’m still really happy with my pace. I rounded down what the distance seems to be thanks to my odometer (MapQuest totally lied and said my route was 4.4 miles round trip, which is ludicrous), and after last week’s disastrous running loop, this is a distinct improvement.
