Oops! Catching up here. Ran a few with the group the previous weekend, nice and unremarkable. Tuesday’s run had my Garmin battery die on me during the run, so beats me on overall time and splits. Wasn’t feeling well all week though, and I skipped Thursday’s run and (eventually, regretfully) Sunday’s race. After a week off, went out for a humid and sweaty four miler with the group. After a week of no exercise (and not feeling great) it was not a pretty sight out on the Mall this morning.

Unremarkable but pleasant five-miler with the guys.

Maybe it was because of the chillier morning but everyone seemed a little zippier today when I met them. Not that I’m complaining!

Early morning with the group

Start time: 4/19/11, 5:50am
Location: National Mall
Distance: 4.96 miles
Average pace: 9:56min/mile
Total Miles For April: 50 miles
Total Miles For 2011: 221 miles

Headed out to the National Mall this morning, ran a mile by myself, then met up with Ben, John, and Steve for another four with them. Would be utterly unremarkable save for the nice weather. Short sleeves and shorts at 6am! Yay! (I’ll be regretting the warmer weather come August, but until then…)

One of those afternoons

Start time: 3/17/11, 6:40pm
Location: Vienna, VA
Distance: 5 miles
Average pace: 9:11min/mile
Total Miles For March: 41 miles
Total Miles For 2011: 139 miles

The plan was simple; go to my parents’ house and pick up an old bike to take to Goodwill, plus drive my mom’s car around the block, and go for a short run. I got there a little bit after 5:30.

Over an hour later, I gave up trying to jump my mom’s car by myself, but by that point I was tired and stressed, and while a run sounded like the way to drop that stress it never really happened. By the last time I went through the (to be fair not terribly steep, but numerous) hills on the way back I was physically and mentally done for the day. Just one of those afternoons where you don’t feel good when you’re done, but I am glad I pushed through the discouragement of the day.

Such a strange feeling…

Start time: 3/15/11, 8:20am
Location: North Arlington
Distance: 5 miles
Average pace: 8:46min/mile
Total Miles For March: 36 miles
Total Miles For 2011: 134 miles

…to have a before-work maintenance run that is actually outside. Could spring finally be here?

If There Be Thorns

Start time: 1/20/11, 4:50pm
Location: Custis Trail
Distance: 5 miles
Average pace: 9:12min/mile
Total Miles For January: 33 miles
Total Miles For 2011: 33 miles

What’s that? A weekday run that was outside? Craziness! (Gee, the last one was… um… December 31st. At least I’ve had some weekend runs since then.) I figured it was time to take advantage of this 40 degree weather while I could, and since it was quiet at work I took some stuff home to tackle later, and ran the Custis (just in case it started to get too dark by the end). Not my fastest run, probably not helping that early on in mile 2 I hit a hill and lost some faith and slowed way the hell down, but later rallied a bit.

Also, somewhere in mile 4 on the way back, there was a huge dead vine coming over the fence and I swatted it with my hand… turns out, it was a thorny vine. Ow. Ow. Ow. I actually ended up briefly stopping to try and pull the thorns out of my glove and thumb. Yeesh. Next time, run around.

Anyway, I need to start tackling this more often. I always say that, but I do mean it. Let’s see if I can stick with that goal. It sure beats the indoor track.

Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell…

Start time: 1/18/11, 4:00pm
Location: TJ Community Center
Distance: 2 miles & ~3.25 miles
Average pace: 9:42min/mile & ~8:45min/mile
Total Miles For January: 28 miles
Total Miles For 2011: 28 miles

Has it really been 2 years since I’ve done this workout? Yeesh. Anyway, you open and close with a 1-mile warm-up/cool-down, but the main part of it is:

2 min (fast)
2 min (jog/recover)
1 min (faster)
1 min (jog/recover)
30 sec (fastest)
30 sec (jog/recover)

…for four cycles, totaling 28 minutes. Now, I’m guessing on the pace and distance; I lost track of how many times I went around the indoor track but I know that the fast parts were either at 8min/mile or (usually) less, and the jogging was around the 9:30-9:40 pace. So… a guess. Once it’s nice outside I’ll strap on the GPS as well and get a better read on how far/fast I went. (Or get better at counting.)
