The idea was a 16-miler where we ran 6 miles on the Custis Trail, then 10 miles on Mt. Vernon Trail. Unfortunately we made a slight miscalculation on where the water fountains were on the second half and we had to beg for some water to make it all the way back.

At the 14-mile point, Steve was feeling ready to bonk and said he was going to walk the rest in. As I have no fall marathon and also had a blister on the bottom of my foot, I decided to walk that last bit in too. Definitely the right call.

Ben, Steve, and I made a new “friend” on our run today. Another runner came up to us while we were running, asked if we were training for anything, and then WOULD NOT GO AWAY. Seriously. He talked a mile a minute about himself (do we really care that that in 2004 he got $40 off a hotel stay?) and mentioned where he works and that he’d run 54 marathons at least 100 times. Possibly more.

After a mile and a half of this Steve finally said, “Well, we don’t want to keep you and you clearly are a faster runner than us, so have a nice run.” And he didn’t get the hint and clung to us for another 4/5ths of a mile until we got to the point where we split up. And then he followed Steve in the direction of home. Sorry buddy, but better you than me.
